Event Overview

Buenos Aires: The Changing Landscape of the Legal Profession

New Markets, Trends and Regional Opportunities and How to Manage the Associated Risks

The legal profession is experiencing a profound transformation, driven by the emergence of new markets, evolving client expectations, technological innovation, and the rise of non-traditional players in the provision of legal services. This conference, to be held in the heart of South America, will bring together legal practitioners, scholars, and industry experts to discuss how these changes are reshaping the practice of law across jurisdictions, with a particular focus on doing business in the Latin American region.

The conference will offer a dual focus:
(i) The rise of fast-growing industries in the region, such as energy (including renewable and non-traditional), the digital economy, life sciences, and cybersecurity—sectors that are creating complex legal challenges and new demands for specialized legal expertise. As these industries continue to expand, they are not only transforming global markets but also requiring legal professionals to develop new skills and adapt to unfamiliar regulatory landscapes.
(ii) The challenges presented by cross-border transactions, international regulatory convergence, and the need for multi-jurisdictional compliance strategies. Legal professionals must navigate an environment where clients expect more efficiency, transparency, and innovation in service delivery, while grappling with new ethical considerations and professional standards.

The opportunities and challenges posed by these developments, particularly for legal professionals doing business in Latin America and emerging markets, both from inside and outside the region, shall be the main focus of this event. It will highlight strategies for law firms and in-house legal teams. Participants will gain practical knowledge and strategic insights to help them remain competitive, foster innovation, and ensure professional relevance in a dynamic legal marketplace. The program is designed to provide valuable perspectives for both local and international lawyers, with an emphasis on actionable takeaways and interactive dialogue. We invite you to join us in Buenos Aires for this timely and thought-provoking conference, which promises to offer valuable insights into the evolving landscape of the legal profession and the critical role lawyers will play in shaping the industries and societies of the future.

Join us in Buenos Aires for an engaging dialogue on the future of the legal profession and strategies to navigate its changing landscape.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions across two focused tracks, designed to address the most pressing legal issues of our time.

Track 1: Doing Business in the Region – Energy, Technology, PPPs, ESG, and Business Opportunities in a Growing Market

This track is dedicated to exploring the significant business opportunities that the Latin American region offers in the context of global economic and technological transformation. The focus will be on sectors that are rapidly evolving and presenting new avenues for legal practice and business development.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Energy and Natural Resources: Examination of the region’s potential in energy, including traditional resources (oil, gas, lithium, copper) and the burgeoning field of renewable energy (green bonds, ESG investments, and green hydrogen). Sessions will address legal frameworks for investment, privatization of public companies, and public-private partnership (PPP) initiatives.
  • Technological Advancements: Analysis of how technology is reshaping legal practice, with a spotlight on the rise of fintech, tech startups, and unicorns originating from the region. Topics will include the legal implications of digital transformation, the role of artificial intelligence, automation, and the emergence of alternative legal service providers.
  • Privatization and PPPs: Legal and regulatory considerations in the privatization of public companies and the structuring of PPPs, with practical insights into recent and upcoming logistics and transport projects in the region.
  • ESG and Sustainable Development: Exploration of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) opportunities, including the legal aspects of sustainable finance, green bonds, and compliance with international standards.
  • Public Promotional Regimes: Overview of public promotional regimes across the region, with an emphasis on how governments are leveraging incentives, subsidies, and regulatory frameworks to stimulate investment, innovation, and sustainable development in key sectors. The discussion will address the intersection of public promotional regimes with international trade agreements, anti-corruption standards, and ESG objectives.

Objectives: Participants will gain practical knowledge on how to leverage these opportunities, understand the regulatory landscape, and develop strategies to support clients in sectors that are driving economic growth and innovation in the region.

Track 2: International Arbitration, Dispute Resolution, and Ethics – Legal Risk Management in a Global Context

This track addresses the complex legal challenges that arise from the intersection of geopolitics, cross-border business, regulatory divergence, and the increasing globalization of legal practice. It is designed to equip legal professionals with the tools to navigate uncertainty and risk in multi-jurisdictional contexts, with a particular focus on dispute resolution and professional responsibility.

Key Focus Areas:

  • International Arbitration and Dispute Resolution: The role of arbitration and other dispute resolution mechanisms in mitigating risks arising from geopolitical tensions, regulatory uncertainty, and cross-border transactions. Sessions will explore recent trends in litigation and arbitration in the region, the impact of international treaties, and the evolving expectations of clients in dispute management.
  • Ethics and Professional Responsibility: Examination of ethical dilemmas faced by lawyers operating in politically sensitive environments, including representation in jurisdictions with authoritarian regimes or industries affected by human rights issues. The track will also address the responsibility of legal professionals to uphold the rule of law and advocate for justice in complex geopolitical scenarios.
  • Compliance and Anti-Corruption: Strategies for navigating anti-corruption laws, compliance requirements, and ethical considerations in international business, particularly in regions with varying legal and political standards and players. Discussion on the lawyer’s role in relationships with governmental authorities.
  • Regulatory Divergence: The impact of differing legal frameworks on data privacy, and antitrust regulation among others, and how these affect multinational operations and transactions. Discussion on ways to ensure compliance with foreign standards by local third parties.
  • Green Transition and Sustainable Employment. Artificial Intelligence and Automation: Workplace transition in polluting industries and the impact of AI on employment and job displacement (use of automated decision-making in HR for hiring, firing, evaluations, etc.).

Objectives: This track will provide participants with a deep understanding of the risks and challenges inherent in today’s global legal environment, offering strategies for effective compliance, dispute resolution, and ethical practice across jurisdictions.
