Half-Year November Conference: Building Leadership Skills for Success

All leaders, regardless of their title or job description, can benefit from leadership trainings to be able to take the most out of their experience in an international association that is growing at a rapid pace; mainly to adapt to the changing needs of the legal community. These trainings can enable legal practitioners to rise through leadership positions in an international association, but also in their law firms.

Therefore, we’re happy to introduce a new event format to AIJA members as well as any young lawyer that may be interested in becoming a member. You are all invited to join us in beautiful Dubrovnik for the first edition of a unique leadership and skills development conference.

On Friday, 23 November, participants will spend one day in an interactive workshop run by Darko Marković, executive coach and leadership development expert, Inn.Side – learning and development. The workshop promises to provide participants with hands-on advice and practical examples on how to become a better and more effective leader in their day to day work.

On Saturday, 24 November, participants are invited to attend one of the three parallel workshops held during the first half of the day. These will focus on how to develop leadership skills in an international association, such as AIJA, by taking on different roles within the association (e.g. commission officer, national representative, member of the organising committee for an event). Participants will learn how such roles can help them to strengthen their personal brand on social media and build a portfolio that they can showcase in their law firm or the wider legal community.

From 22-24 November, networking sessions will complement the leadership and skills development programme to allow for business contacts and meeting other international law practitioners.

Another reason to join us is the city itself. Dubrovnik is an amazing destination not to be missed! Regardless of whether you are visiting for the first time or the hundredth, the sense of awe never fails to descend when you set eyes on the beauty of the old town. Indeed, it is hard to imagine anyone becoming jaded by the city’s white limestone streets, baroque buildings and the endless shimmer of the Adriatic, or failing to be inspired by a walk along the ancient city walls that protected a civilised, sophisticated republic for centuries.

B/ Forum of the Commissions: Past, present and future. How to take on a role in AIJA
The Forum of the Commissions (FoC) of AIJA has the overall responsibility for coordinating the activities of the Commissions in AIJA. The Forum monitors the activities of the Commissions and actively takes part in the improvement and quality control of the scientific work produced within AIJA.

Part #1: Past – Learning from previous experience
·        Identify the process of becoming an AIJA officer in the FoC
·        Discuss the expectations and share feedback from past experiences in this role
·        Discuss guidelines, handbooks or tools that may be needed to improve the sharing of information, documents, knowledge etc. in the FoC

Part #2: Present – How to communicate, engage and be active
·        Communications. Discuss the communications processes with new members, existing members, other officers or commissions, the Bureau or Extended Bureau, Brussels secretariat, and other organisations in the context of the GDPR.
·        Succession. Explain the succession and transition process in AIJA, specifically the role of current officers during new appointments.
·        Interactivity. Explore best practices in getting new or other members involved or related to mentoring within the association, initiatives across commissions, meetings during AIJA events or outside the official events.
·        Events. Discuss the role of officers and commissions in planning and organising events in AIJA. Learn how to engage with the appointed organising committee for an event. Learn how to set up and budget an event, involve external speakers and trainers. Learn how to work with the AIJA event tool. Discuss how to plan events with other organisations.

Part #3: Future – How to evolve the work of the Commissions
·        Discuss the work of current commissions and ways to evolve the association towards new topics, new commissions.
·        Discuss ways of working within the commissions. Identify need for fixed rules.
·        Discuss ways to leverage current practices to develop new initiatives.

C/ Law Course Committee: From a good idea to a successful AIJA event. Team work makes the dream work
The Law Course Committee (LCC) of AIJA is the management committee of AIJA responsible for the calendar of events organised by the association throughout the year.

HOW TO GET TO THERE

From Dubrovnik Cilipi International Airport

Taxi: 25 to 35 min ride to the hotel  -  fare: +/-  300 HRK/ 40 EUR

Private airport pick-up via Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik: Car transfer (up to 3 people): 300 HRK/ 40 EUR per car; Minivan transfer (up to 7 people) 500 HRK / 67 EUR per minivan. To book the pick-up please contact concierge.dubrovnik@hilton.com or +385 20 320 320, with your name, surname, arrival time and flight number, at least 48 hours in advance. Once your flight details are received , the private transfer will be organised and confirmation details provided.

Uber: available in Dubrovnik - the fare shall be around 180-250 HRK (24-33 EUR)

Public shuttle bus: Take the shuttle bus which is scheduled to meet incoming and outgoing flights. Cost per passenger is 5 EUR. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes and stops at the Old Town gates Pile, 100 meters from the Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik hotel.
