Expert evidence: from a technical issue to cross-examination

Join us on Wednesday 17 June 2026, from 13:00 to 14:00 CEST, for the second webinar of 2026, hosted by the AIJA International Arbitration Commission.

This session will focus on the (strategic) use of expert evidence, one of the most recurring practical issues in international arbitration.

Our panellists will address expert evidence by discussing the different stages of the proceedings using a mock scenario and covering the roles of counsel, expert, and arbitrator:

  • Before proceedings: a technical issue occurs, getting from client guidance to expert involvement.
  • Start of proceedings: how to use the expert in proceedings? Drafting expert statements, what is the purpose of the statement, and how to define counsel involvement?
  • Before and during proceedings: what is the role and what are the obligations of the expert? Independent advisor to the Tribunal, or also assistant to the party that hires them?
  • At the Hearing: how can the expert assist in persuading a Tribunal? How do you prepare for a cross-examination?

The discussion will also reflect on practical challenges and cultural differences that may arise when involving experts in arbitration proceedings and considering international dynamics.

The one-hour webinar will feature ample time for questions from the audience.

This webinar is free and open to all AIJA members.
