AIJA HALF-YEAR NOVEMBER CONFERENCE - ESG PART 1
Environment, Climate and Sustainability: Opportunities, Challenges and Risks
This coming year AIJA is going to be focusing on issues pertaining to Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance - or “ESG” - goals. To this end, both of next year’s Half-Year Conferences, in Edinburgh and The Hague, will discuss ESG themes. Edinburgh will be concentrating on the various environmental and sustainability aspects of ESG, whilst The Hague Organising Committee is including Social and Governance themes in its May ’23 Half-Year Conference, in addition to two other unrelated tracks.

Edinburgh is steeped in history and culture, is the home of Scotland's unique legal system, and is a world influencer in science, business, education, medicine and the arts. It is also the UK's largest financial hub outside London – at the same time as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the host of the largest annual arts festival in the world. The city is compact and easy to navigate around and yet large enough to satisfy all your needs and interests. Edinburgh has been voted the UK's Top City at the Guardian Travel Awards for 13 consecutive years. Edinburgh usually sees more than six million visitors a year and we are excited about adding to that number with the AIJA Half-Year Conference.
Scotland is the right place to kick off discussions of ESG, because last year COP26 was hosted in Scotland. That event truly brought the challenges we face, and the real need to accelerate action on climate change, into sharp focus. One year on from COP26, the AIJA Half-Year Conference in Edinburgh will involve all of our various Commissions focusing on how Environmental issues affect them, looking closely at the impact on both businesses and law firms.
We will be running a single academic programme, across two tracks, which will consider a variety of topics including:
- Energy Security & a Net Zero World (opportunities, challenges and risks arising from energy security including a focus on off-shore wind),
- Green-washing - the benefits and risks of published sustainability goals and representations,
- Financing renewable energy projects: exploring project finance, green bonds and green loan principles,
- The rise of climate litigation,
- A Values-Driven Business Model: How to Build (and Grow) an "Impact Law" Practice.
Besides a great academic programme, you will be piped into Edinburgh Castle, enjoy a dramatic dinner in the beautiful Signet Library, take a turn with us at a Scottish Ceilidh dance, sample a “wee dram” of Scotch whisky, and explore some of the most beautiful and historical sights of Edinburgh.

Academic programme overview
TRACK #1 - Exploring the E in ESG: Environment, Energy and Economy
One year on from COP26 hosted in Scotland, this track will consider environmental and sustainability issues relevant to energy security, the renewable energy sector and supply chains.
Topics to be discussed
With contributions from keynote speakers from industry and global organisations:
- Energy Security & a Net Zero World (opportunities, challenges and risks arising from energy security including a focus on off-shore wind)
- Antitrust law and the environment – how can anti-trust law assist in achieving the goals of COP 26 (looking both from a merger control and antitrust perspective)
- Financing renewable energy projects: exploring project finance, green bonds and green loan principles
- The transactional life cycle of a renewable energy project: a look at early stage Joint Ventures; fundraising; and divestment of energy projects
- Sustainability and supply chains

TRACK #2 - Climate, claims and compliance: how to get it right?
With the cumulative number of climate change-related cases having more than doubled since 2015 in comparison to the preceding three decades, governments, private and public sector organisations are increasingly concerned about how to combat this increasing litigation risk. Claims target not only perceived government inaction or lack of ambition in meeting climate goals and commitments, but also a wider variety of charitable, private sector and financial actors. This track will consider some significant cases of the past 12 months and the diversity of arguments being deployed including themes of green-washing and fiduciary duty, as well as how litigation and arbitration can be used to achieve a swift and effective resolution of these claims.

- Whistle-blowing and climate change: employer obligations and issues on sustainability compliance
- Litigating energy disputes: is arbitration the answer?
- Charitable purposes: investing responsibly to reflect ESG considerations. Does climate trump investment return?

AIJA Women Network Plenary Session - Addressing Reproductive Health Challenges In The Workplace: A Workshop For All
The topic of reproductive health – and the challenges that many face with that – is not limited to junior women who want children. It impacts everyone, it is important, and we should all strive to understand it better in order to help promote a healthy, happy and understanding workplace.If you are a law firm manager, you need to understand the challenges your employees will face during their reproductive years. If you are a lawyer looking to further your career and start a family, then you need an open culture in your workplace to be able to discuss these issues, and if your law firm doesn’t have that open culture, the onus is on you to create it. And to do this, we all need to start talking about reproductive health challenges in the workplace.
This workshop is designed to educate and inspire change. We will be looking at the life cycle of your employees. From supporting early career lawyers with understanding their cycle and hormones and how that impacts behaviour and how to prevent pregnancy, to understanding the 30something lawyers who want to become parents whilst on partnership track and what employers need to do to support both career and family building aspirations, to understanding menopause and how for some women, the impact can have a devastating impact on their health and careers.

SCILL & Sustainability Board Session - A Values-Driven Business Model: How to Build (and Grow) an “Impact Law” Practice

Join the discussion and learn about CRM, business development, budget and fees structuring, marketing, hiring and training policies (and much more!) for lawyers with a positive impact.

Social programme overview
WELCOME RECEPTION @ Edinburgh Castle – Wednesday 16 November (18:30-22:30)
We will kick-off the first evening of the Conference within the walls of the historic Edinburgh Castle standing on the Castle Rock. After an uphill stroll, the Castle - once a home to kings and queens - will welcome AIJA delegates to the sound of traditional pipe music. The monumental building will reveal its tales during our visit, with the opportunity to experience a private viewing of the Scottish Crown Jewels. In the Queen Anne Building, you will enjoy the Welcome Reception in the form of a light walking dinner.
CONFERENCE DINNER @ The Signet Library – Thursday 17 November (19:30-02:00)
The Conference Dinner will take place in Edinburgh’s best-kept secret, The Signet Library, located in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town. Step into history and experience the unique atmosphere of the venue and its stunning Georgian architecture dated back to early years of the 19th century. The place is not only a legal library, but an extensive archive of manuscripts, journals and other documents being an important source of Scottish history and culture. The walking dinner will feature stations with Scottish specialties selected just for you, and the evening will be enriched with a special tasting of the best whiskies and gins led by the masters who will reveal the mystery of making these fine spirits. The evening will conclude with dancing.

HOME HOSPITALITY: EDINBURGH PUB-CRAWLING EDITION @Allocated pub-crawl routes – Friday 18 November (19:00-23:00)
On that day we want to give you a real Friday night experience in Edinburgh and for this AIJA Half-Year Conference the things will be done a bit differently. We want you to get a taste of the traditional we “go to the pub” after work on a Friday night! That’s why rather than being allocated to a home host as you would with the standard home hospitality format, you will be allocated to….. a pub group. Each pub group will have an allocated number and a “ring-leader” (the ring-leader is the person who rounds up a group to go the pub - they are usually a wee bit devious!), who will guide you to a couple of Edinburgh pubs. Probably you may know it as a “pub-crawl”. On your pub-crawl, you will visit a couple of traditional Edinburgh pubs - nothing classy! Your ring-leader will receive the indications about your pub-crawl route, which will either take you through the Grassmarket, Edinburgh Royal Mile or Rose Street, so you will get the chance to see some of Edinburgh too. In each pub, your group can have a few “swallies” (these are drinks - which can be non-alcoholic!) or “nips” (beware of the nips - they always contain whisky) and get to know one another. Be aware that all routes will lead to... a final pub-crawl destination – Brewhemia.

After an evening full Friday night Edinburgh experience, join the afterparty to swing to the best rhythms and enjoy the rest of the night with your fellow Conference attendees for as long as your legs will carry you (till 3:00 am).
GALA DINNER 'A Night at the Museum' @ National Museums Scotland – Saturday 19 November (19:00-02:00)
The National Museum of Scotland - the perfect spot to reflect on the past and the future, as a wrap-up to the Conference week. A place soaked in history, taking you on a far-flung journey through the centuries, tucked away in a building with a mix of modern and Victorian styles, creating a vibrant atmosphere. Amidst Scottish stories, natural wonders, art and design, science and technology, the Grand Gallery will host our Conference Gala Dinner. During this farewell night you will get a full and one-of-a-kind Scottish experience: wear black tie in Scottish way - AIJA will organise kilts uniforms for the gentlemen and tartan sashes for the ladies available for rental prior to the event; learn the moves of a traditional Ceilidh from the experts; groove to the rhythms on the dance floor and much more. No doubt it will be a night to remember!

AIJA shall not be held liable for any expenses the participant may suffer as the result of participant’s failure to comply with his/her obligations.
It is recommended for each participant to purchase a cancellation and travel insurance.
Please note that in-house counsel registrations are subject to review and confirmation by AIJA. AIJA considers in-house counsel professionals who hold a university degree in law allowing access to a bar association and practicing law as an in-house counsel in private, public, or non-profit companies, institutions or organisations. Please note that in-house counsel who are at the same time active as fee-earning lawyers or consultants are not eligible to the discounted in-house counsel fee.

GET TO THE SHERATON GRAND HOTEL & SPA FROM THE AIRPORT
Hop on the tram! Trams are one of the easiest ways to get to and from the airport with fast and frequent services to Edinburgh city centre. Trams depart every 7 minutes, between 7am and 7pm, and every 15 minutes outwith these hours, with an end-to-end journey of just 30 minutes.
Finding the tram stop. The airport tram stop is right outside the main terminal next to the plaza and Edinburgh sign. Where does the tram go? Services run between the airport and York Place in Edinburgh city centre.

TO GO TO THE SHERATON GRAND HOTEL & SPA, GET OFF AT WEST END. It is then a 5 min-walk up to the hotel.
Fares. Adult Airport Single ticket: 6.50 GBP

· Remember to buy tickets before boarding the trams. You can get them from vending machines at any tram stop – including at the airport.
